Over the years since 1986, the King Edward Avenue Task Force has had many successes. Here are some highlights from the past and recent successes:
- 2008: Convinced the City of Ottawa to ban all Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) transit bus parking from King Edward Avenue and other Byward Market streets;
- 2007: Working with the Lowertown Community Association, hosted a King Edward Avenue Forum that included a video, pollution analysis, a panel of community leaders and politicians, and recommendations for going forward;
- 2007: Convinced Ottawa City Council to conduct a lane reductions study of up to $125,000 considering the possibility of reducing King Edward from six to four lanes;
- 2001: Convinced environmental assessment consultants to include removal of all power lines and relocation of the on and off ramps to the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge further away from the community;
- 2000: Produced a 34-page report, including a 67-page addendum, entitled “King Edward Avenue Improvement Project, Planning and Design Process: Requested Public Input;”
- 1999: With the Rideau Street business community, won an Ontario Municipal Board appeal forcing the City of Ottawa to protect the Kettle Island bridge corridor and to place the King Edward Avenue Community Improvement Plan at the top of its infrastructure priorities;
- 1990’s: Convinced City of Ottawa to develop the King Edward Avenue Community Improvement Plan and actively participated in all phases.
