Commuter Traffic
The high amount of commuter cars that use King Edward Avenue during the morning and afternoon rush hours also causes many problems for the Avenue in terms of noise, pollution, and safety. A large percentage of this traffic is bound for the east end of the city. This is evident from the volume of traffic using the St. Patrick Street Parkway to connect to the Vanier Parkway. While the Task Force supports transit as the ultimate solution, it also acknowledges that some kind of link is needed in the east end to better balance the street network between Gatineau and Ottawa. A new east end bridge, lane reductions on King Edward Avenue, and improved transit would help better manage the effects of the high traffic volumes.
