Homelessness

The majority of Ottawa's homeless are found in the Byward Market. Three major shelters and a large number of social services are concentrated in one area. Two of the shelters are located directly along the downtown truck route. The Task Force believes that the long-term solution to the homeless problem is supportive housing and the dispersion of shelters and social services. The Task Force believes that the concentration of shelters and social services has encouraged a certain level of ghettoization along King Edward. There is currently no lead on the Task Force for this issue; however, efforts are underway to move towards more supportive housing.
